SC seeks Centre's reply on lowering of percentile for NEET BDS courses

Supreme Court has asked the Centre to reply to the plea challenging the Centre's decision to not lower the percentile qualification of NEET BDS courses.

The top court of India has sought the Centre's reply to the plea by NEET aspirants which challenged the government's decision to not lower the percentile for NEET BDS courses for the session 2021-22.

In a notice sent to the Centre, the Supreme Court bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud, Sanjiv Khanna, and Surya Kant has asked the government to reply on some specific points like the total number of vacant seats in the All India Quota and State Quota, the total number of eligible candidates after deducting the admission granted for MBBS courses and BDS courses, and the total number of seats available in government, private and deemed colleges. 

Why not lower percentile when seats are available in NEET BDS courses

The bench has also asked the Centre to give reasons why it is not allowing to lower the percentile when seats are available in the government and private/deemed colleges.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Centre, said that the figures given in the chart are not accurate as they have received the updated data only before the hearing which states that out of 20,000 seats only 9,000 have been filled up. She said that they will file a comprehensive affidavit giving the exact number of figures of the students applied and the number of seats filled.
