Supreme Court hearing on accommodation of Ukraine returned medicos on Dec 8
In today's hearing, the apex court discussed accommodation and internship opportunities for Ukraine-returned medical students and scheduled the next hearing on December 8, 2022.
Supreme Court of India has once again scheduled the hearing of accommodation of Ukraine-returned medical students for another date. The next hearing is scheduled for December 8, 2022. In today's hearing, the court discussed the accommodation for these MBBS students as well as internship opportunities in India.
A bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and Vikram Nath heard this matter today. The case is going on in this matter but the Centre already submitted in the court earlier that there is no policy in National Medical Commission to accommodate these students and any such measure will affect medical education standards in India.
As per Times Now report, the students' counsel said that students in their fourth to the sixth year would be accommodated as a one-time measure. The counsel proceeded to cite a few examples of vacancies in Indian medical institutions and added that in view of these vacancies, students would be allowed practical and clinical training. However, the Centre once again said that the students cannot be accommodated as there is no policy for doing so.
Regarding internship opportunities, students' counsel said except for Tamil Nadu and Kerala, all other states have allowed final-year students to complete their internships in India. On this, the court has ordered the respective state medical council to look into the matter and also questioned why these students were not allowed to do so, despite clearing the FMGE exam.
