Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has been trying since long to scrap NEET in the state and now he has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to exempt the state from the undergraduate medical entrance examination.

While PM Narendra Modi inaugurated 11 new medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin also took this opportunity to urge the Prime Minister to exempt the state from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

Stalin said during the virtual event, "Admission policy of Tamil Nadu plays an important role in our health infrastructure and to protect this, we have been continuously demanding exemption to Tamil Nadu from NEET. I appeal to the Union Government to consider our request favourably," as reported by NDTV.

"Tamil Nadu is a leading State in launching several health programmes and our initiatives like the Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam (healthcare at people’s doorsteps), Innuyir Kaappom (a major initiative to save lives of road accident victims by providing free medical treatment within first 48 hours to those injured) and Kannoli Kappom Thittam (free spectacles), to name a few, are unique," he added.

He also urged the Centre to expedite the establishment of AIIMS Madurai and sanction a new AIIMS for Coimbatore.

Exemption from NEET has been a long-standing demand of the state. A bill regarding this is already passed in the State Assembly and sent to the Governor. The state has requested Governor to pass it to the President of India. Stalin and other parties have now decided to also reach out to other states on the matter.
