Telangana government has formally applied to the NMC and sought approval for eight new government medical colleges in the state.

The state government has sought the National Medical Commission's (NMC) approval for the eight new government medical colleges in the state with 150 MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery) seat intake capacity in each of these colleges.

These new medical colleges will be at Jagtial, Mancherial, Ramagundam, Wanaparthy, Nagarkurnool, Sangareddy, Mahabubabad, and Kothagudem.

The Hindu reported that the Director of Medical Education K Ramesh Reddy has confirmed that the application was made well before the deadline which was on Sunday and it duly complied with the procedures for a total of 1200 seats.

The total number of medical colleges in Telangana is 34 and out of these 11 are government medical colleges and others are private colleges. The state currently has 5,240 MBBS seats across the government and private medical colleges.

After the state gets the permission, it is planning to start these new colleges from next year with super speciality departments which will straightaway offer clinical services at the attached hospitals. Each of these colleges will have 60 posts of super specialists in 12 departments including gastroenterology, neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology, and cardio-thoracic departments. The government is planning to fill nearly 8,000 posts of doctors, para-medical staff and other categories.

As per the report, Reddy expected the NMC teams to visit these colleges when the construction of the buildings was over, that is by November or December. The building's construction was taken up by the Roads and Buildings department.
