There should be no penalties for leaving PG medical seats, says FAIMA Chairman
Instead of heavy penalties and bond services we should give them right to choose their career and life, he added.
FAIMA National Chairman Dr. Rohan Krishnan has raised the issue of heavy penalities against the PG medical students when they leave their medical seats.
His tweet reads, "I think that there should be no penalties if someone wants to leave his/her pg seats. Recently when I was working in England , i was told that dropping out rate there at UG / MBBS level is about 50%. And there is no shame in that. Similarly if someone does not want to pursue the course. Instead of heavy penalties and bond services we should give them right to choose their career and life."
The high stress related to a medical profession is being highlighted in recent times with the alarming increase in the suicide cases of medicos. The medical students in India secure a seat in reputed institutes after clearing the highly competitive NEET examination and then NEET PG for the PG seats. Then, when they want to leave these seats they are required to pay hefty penalties.
The high stress and expensive medical seats in India along with the long working hours of residents without proper leaves is making the medical students suffer from multiple mental disorders including depression and anxiety. Now, the Association has also decided to establilsh a National Mental Health Task force to fight the rising problem of mental health disorders among the medical students. Recently, Maharashtra DMER has submitted a proposal to the state government to waive INR 20 lakh penalty imposed on resident doctors who decide to leave their seats due to mental health concerns.
