TN gears up for starting MBBS in Tamil; New medical college proposed

After Home Minister Amit Shah launched the MBBS books in Hindi in Madhya Pradesh, many other states are planning to start the course in Hindi and in their local languages. Now, Tamil Nadu is planning to offer undergraduate medical courses in the Tamil language.

As per reports, the state is planning a new medical college for this purpose. The government is planning to build the proposed medical college at the Communicable Diseases Hospital run by Greater Chennai Corporation in Tondiarpet.

Health Minister Ma Subramanian said that the work on this college will start only after six districts in the state will get the Centre's nod to start a new medical college, as reported by TOI.

The directorate of medical education will seek approval from National Medical Commission (NMC) to start a medical college in Perambalur, Mayiladuthurai, Tenkasi, Ranipet, Tirupattur and Kancheepuram districts in 2023, he added.

“Already, three professors, who were posted on diversion duty, have been involved in translating first year MBBS textbooks into Tamil for the last one year. The translation work is likely to be completed in a month after which we will consult linguistic experts to see if the translation works are 100% correct. This work will go on for 10 days after which the Chief Minister will release the textbooks,” he said, as reported by The Hindu.

Other states which are planning to start MBBS in languages other than English are - Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. UP CM Yogi Adityanath has announced starting medical and technical courses in Hindi next year and the Maharashtra government said to start MBBS in Marathi from the next academic session.
