TN: Govt plans to start medical education in Tamil
Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan said that the state government is planning to introduce medical education in Tamil.
While attending a programme for honouring senior citizens, Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan said that the territorial government intends to establish a medical institution offering MBBS courses in Tamil.
“In consultation with the Chief Minister, an expert committee will be constituted to work out modalities for the preparation of medical books in Tamil. The Madhya Pradesh government has introduced the Hindi medium of education in medical courses. We will introduce Tamil medical textbooks, and students will be given the option of choosing that medium,” she said, as reported by The Hindu.
"Prime Minister and the Home Minister did not try to impose any language, and were only trying to promote technical education in the mother-tongue," she added.
The New Education Policy emphasises starting education in the mother tongue, also Prime Minister Modi has said many times that starting technical and medical education in regional languages would break the language barriers for these courses and even students from rural backgrounds would be able to pursue these courses comfortably.
Recently, Home Minister Amit Shah introduced MBBS books in Hindi in Madhya Pradesh, and this has started the whole debate in the medical fraternity that whether medical education should be started in other languages than English.
"Multi-language MBBS course will deteriorate the quality of Medical Education & at the end patients will suffer because of poor quality docs as no research ,no journals no textbook in Hindi CM &Home Minister goes to abroad for treatment. Hindi Graduates will be treating poor ppl," tweeted Dr Rohan, National Founder of FAIMA (Federation of All India Medical Association).
