TN Health Department warns private medical colleges against violating rules

Tamil Nadu health department has warned the self-financing medical colleges that any violation of prescribed norms for admission could attract severe consequences.

The health department will either withdraw approval given to the college or cancel their affiliation if they are found to be asking for higher fees than the prescribed amount, said Health Secretary P Senthil Kumar, as reported by TOI.

Through a notice, he warned the colleges that if any complaint will be received from students “strict action” would be initiated. College administrations have been advised to strictly adhere to the orders issued by the Supreme Court, High Court and the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The Background

The health department had been receiving several complaints from students, as confirmed by the medical education official. Candidates who had been allotted seats were given time till November 7 to join colleges.

To prevent the colleges from demanding huge fees, this year, the health department introduced a new rule which allowed the students to send the fee to DME which will be forwarded to the colleges. However, as per reports, the department is still getting complaints. “In one instance I had to personally intervene over phone with the college’s admission department personnel,” the official said.

The department is getting many emails from students who chose to remain anonymous and the complaints are coming from medical, dental and paramedical students.
