Union Budget 2024: Govt plans more medical colleges, says Finance Minister

Interim Budget 2024: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented an interim budget - a short-term financial plan today, the Department of School Education is allocated INR 73,008 crore, while the Higher Education sector has been allocated INR 47, 619 crore.

Interim Budget 2024: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the budget 2024 today. She allocated INR 1,24,638 Crore for the Education Ministry, which is around a 10% rise as compared to last year. While announcing the budget 2024, she said that the government is planning to set up more medical colleges by utilizing existing hospital infrastructure. For this purpose, it will be setting up a committee to examine the matter.

Several youths are ambitious to get qualified as doctors and aim to serve the people of the country through improved healthcare services, she added.

“Our government plans to set up more medical colleges by utilizing the existing hospital infrastructure under various departments,” Sitharaman said.

Topmost medical colleges All India Institute of Medical Sciences, N Delhi and Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh also see an increased budget allocation at INR 4523 crores and INR 2200 crores this year.

The government has been focussing more on health care after the Covid-19 pandemic to strengthen the health care sector of the country. The finance minister further pointed out that female enrolment in higher education has gone up by 28% in 10 years, and in STEM courses, it stands at 43% which is one of the highest in the world.
