Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences, Mohali gets NMC's nod to begin MBBS admissions this year.

Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences, Mohali is all set to be operationalised by this year. The medical college is affiliated with Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi said the state government has been consistently working towards making the state a hub of medical education.

Charanjit Singh said that after properly examining the Commission Assessor’s report, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted the Letter of Permission (LoP) to Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences for starting the regular classes from this year for 100 MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery) seats.

The state's medical education will get a major boost with this nod and people of the state will get better health facilities, said Charanjit Singh.

NMC had inspected the college two weeks back and after issuing LoP the college has been asked to submit the undertaking within 14 days stating it will comply with NMC's guidelines and instructions.

Charanjit Singh has asked the concerned officials to complete the needed formalities at the earliest so that the academic session can be started at the Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences soon.

Hindustan Times quoted Bhavneet Bharti, director principal of the medical college, “We have received the Letter of Intent and will giving an undertaking to the NMC. Our admission process will begin this academic year, probably in October after the result of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test that was held on September 12.”

The project was sanctioned in 2012 during the Akali Dal regime under the central-state alliance with funding in the ratio of 60:40. The project budget is Rs 300 crore. The Punjab government had also announced funding of Rs 157 crore in its 2020-21 financial budget for the construction of the medical college. The seats will eventually be upgraded to 220 seats.

Currently, Punjab has 1,400 MBBS seats across private and government medical colleges and with the addition of these 100 MBBS seats in Mohali, the total number of MBBS seats in Punjab will be 1500.
