With Mumbai University all set to release the first merit list tomorrow; i.e. June 29, several aspirants will still have to wait for admissions as few sought-after autonomous colleges affiliated with the varsity have decided to wait. Few colleges have decided to wait for CBSE and ISC results, and set aside some of the seats as they usually see up to 50 per cent occupants by these students in self-financed courses.
This year, the varsity also witnessed a spike in the number of applications in all the courses, with the maximum number of applications coming for BCom, followed by BMS and the BAF. Applications in BSc IT and BSc Computer Science have gone up by over 100 per cent, as reported by TOI. The number of applications received also went up by almost 85 per cent for computer science courses as compared to last year.
Principal Uma Shankar from SIES College said that "students may be finding these courses more attractive as they are job oriented. Barring mass media, most courses have seen an increase in applications by a few thousand. In mass media, it has dropped by around 3,500. Not all colleges will come out with their merit list on Wednesday. Mithibai and NM College, which come under the SVKM group, will conduct their admissions to self-financed courses based on the scores in entrance tests, which will conclude on June 30."
"We have written to the university stating that we are autonomous and that we need to give equal opportunity to students from all boards. For admissions to traditional BA, BCom and BSc courses, we will wait for the CBSE and ISC results," said principal Krutika Desai, Mithibai College, adding that both the colleges will stick to their original plan.
Jai Hind College, too, will not be releasing its merit lists as of now. St Xavier's College will put out the first list for BA, BSc, BCom and BAF on June 29 and will set aside seats for the CBSE and ISC students.
