The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has given its nod to 19 engineering colleges to impart engineering courses in six Indian languages for engineering programmes across 10 states from the 2021-22 academic year.

The National Education Policy (NEP) does not envisage a one-year engineering programme in Indian languages, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Monday.

He said this while replying to a written question in the Lok Sabha. “NEP does not envisage a one-year engineering programme in Indian languages. However, NEP has made recommendations for use of mother tongue and local language as a medium of instruction and offer programmes bilingually in the higher education system,” he said.

The Ministry of Education also informed the Lok Sabha that there are no proposals under its consideration from public-funded universities looking forward to set up their campuses abroad.

“As of now, no such proposal is under consideration in the Ministry of Education. All central universities, including the University of Delhi, are a statutory autonomous organisation established under an Act of Parliament and governed by their respective Act and the statutes and the ordinances made there-under,” he said.
