The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) (Amendment) Bill 2021 has been tabled in the Lok Sabha today.

The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) (Amendment) Bill 2021 is to provide the status of national importance to the six institutes in Kolkata, Raebareli, Hyderabad, Hajipur, Guwahati, and Ahmedabad. 

These institutes reportedly played significant roles in research during the Covid-19 pandemic. The NIPER) (Amendment) Bill 2021 aims at encouraging pharmaceutical research.

Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya tabled the NIPER (Amend ) Bill, 2021 in Lok Sabha today, December 6, 2021.

Here are the highlights of the discussion on the NIPER (Amend ) Bill, 2021 today in Lok Sabha:

BJP MP Anurag Sharma requested that all these six institutes must take up higher research in Ayurveda and also requested the Centre to increase the intake of students in these institutes. He highlighted that NIPERs has published 5,277 research papers, entered into more than 160 MoUs with industry and have filed 301 patents until now.

Mohammad Javed, Congress MP from Bihar's Kishanganj, said that the NIPER in Hazipur does not have a permanent campus to operate from and the condition of the institute is not good. He requested the Centre to have a minimum of one women member and one member from the SC/ST community each on the NIPERs Board and also to open one institute in his constituency.

NCP MP Supriya Sadanand Sule said that though many major Pharma companies are in Maharashtra, the state has no NIPER, we really need one NIPER in our state, added Ms Sule.
