NIT Calicut collaborates to work on AI for early detection of cancer
NIT Calicut shared that a joint research work involving the three institutes, using the ‘Federated Learning’ method for improving lung cancer treatment, is already progressing.
The National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) and MVR Cancer Centre and Research Institute (MVCCRI) have collaborated by signing a deal to work with Maastricht University. The institutes have joined hands to work on AI for cancer research.
In a post from its official LinkedIn account, NIT Calicut shared that a joint research work involving the three institutes, using the ‘Federated Learning’ method for improving lung cancer treatment, is already progressing.
The joint research will enable the early detection of cancer.
The joint research with the Maastricht University and Maastro Clinic, Netherlands will leverage artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and data science to enable early detection and treatment of cancer.
The technology institute had also organised a discussion. Faculty members from the institute, doctors and research scholars took part in gthe discussion and shared their ideas on leveraging AI, ML and data science to help medical practitioners take better clinical decisions for effective cancer treatment.
While speaking at the event, NIT Calicut Director Professor Prasad Krishna encouraged the young researchers in the country to utilise their research potential compassionately, bringing comfort to the suffering patients.
10 million lives lost due to cancer
Estimated data reveals that in 2020, nearly 10 million people lost their lives to cancer worldwide. In the same year, an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases were registered, according to the Global Cancer Statistics 2020 report. In India, 1,392,179 cancer cases were reported during the same period. Around 50 percent of deaths are due to late diagnosis.
