NMC will allow the medical candidates to appear for NEXT improvement examinations every year.

National Medical Commission (NMC) is envisaging the upcoming National Exit Test (NEXT) to be the gateway to admissions to all PG medical courses. The exam is set to replace the NEET PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Post-Graduation), and FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) exams.

NMC proposed the exam as a part of the bill passed in 2019 as the government wants to standardize medical education across the country. The scores will be valid for three years and for the candidates who would not be not satisfied with their scores, the NMC has confirmed that it will allow candidates to appear for improvement examination every year.

Dr MK Ramesh, the President of the PG Medical Education Board of NMC has confirmed that the candidates not satisfied with their NEXT scores will have the option to improve the scores by appearing in the test again the next year, reported Medical Dialogues.

The NEXT will probably come into force from 2023 as it is still being developed. The NEXT will combine the exit exams for both the MBBS graduates and FMGs (Foreign Medical Graduates), he added.

The NEXT exam will not only offer the license for MBBS graduates but its scores will also be used to provide admission to various post-graduate medical courses such as MD (Doctor of Medicine), MS (Master of Surgery), and DM (Doctorate of Medicine) programs. It means the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) graduate will have to complete their final internship to get the license for practising as a doctor in India and FMGs have to qualify through NEXT to get registration with State Medical Councils for practising as a doctor in India.

In NMCs draft on PG Medical Education Regulations, 2021, one major point was that that NEXT score will be used to get admission to various PG medical courses. However, medical organizations such as the Indian Medical Association (IMA) pointed out the lack of clarity regarding the NEXT exam.
