Four Nursing students got arrested in Coimbatore for allegedly ragging a junior.

On Thursday, Coimbatore police have arrested four nursing students of a private college for allegedly ragging and slapping a junior student.

As per the police, the victim hails from Kollam in neighbouring Kerala. He had returned to college on September 20 after the government had eased the Covid induced restrictions. He was staying in the men's hostel of the college.

The alleged incident took place on September 27, when a group of 13 senior nursing students barged into his hostel room and started ragging him and also slapped him.

Despite the victim lodged a complaint in the college, the college administration did not do anything about it and after which the student returned to his hometown and narrated the incident to his parents.

The boy's parents came to Coimbatore and filed a police complaint against the 13 senior students who ragged their son and based on the complaint, the police arrested four students and booked nine more students.

The police registered the case under Sections 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly) and 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC and sections 4 (Penalty for ragging) Sections 3 (Prohibition of ragging) and 4 (Penalty for ragging) of The Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act.

Section 3 says, "Ragging within or without any educational institution is prohibited.
Section 4 says, "Whoever directly or indirectly commits, participates in abets or propagates "ragging" within or without any educational institution, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years and shall also be liable to a fine which may extend to ten thousand rupees."

The four students, who were arrested in this case, have been released on bail and police is searching for the other nine accused.
