The UP Nurses & Midwives Council has permitted the up-gradation of JNMC's GNM course to a BSc Nursing degree.
The UP Nurses & Midwives Council has issued a letter of permission and granted the up-gradation of General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgaum (JNMC) to a BSc (Bachelor of Science) Nursing degree with an intake of 20 students.
The letter reads, "UP Nurses and Midwives Council has no objection for the GNM course conducted by JNMC, AMU to be upgraded as a BSc Nursing course. The permission has been accorded."
The Vice-Chancellor of AMU (Aligarh Muslim University), Prof Mansoor, said, "Maintaining appropriate staffing in healthcare facilities is essential to enhance preparedness for pandemics and crisis situations. With the permission to upgrade the GNM course to a BSc Nursing, we will easily meet the requirements of health workers".
The Covid-19 pandemic especially the first and deadly second wave highlighted the significance of the preparedness of India to deal with such health emergency situations in future.
The GNM course is a three and a half-year diploma course in Nursing, whereas BSc Nursing is a four-year professional course. To study BSc nursing, the candidates must have completed their 12th exam with Physics, Biology and Chemistry as the main subjects. The Indian BSc Nursing degree is widely accepted in other countries as it teaches nursing science with the essence of humanities. To get admission to the BSc Nursing courses, one needs to appear for the entrance exams.
