The Odisha government is planning to upgrade 100 high schools in the next academic year to check the high dropout rate in the state. School Education Minister Samir Dash further said that as many as 49,098 secondary school students have dropped out of school before entering the higher secondary level in 2020-21. This includes 15,792 tribals and 11,045 Dalits. 

Education Minister said "the government plans to upgrade the large secondary schools in the blocks, where there are no Plus 2 colleges if the former fulfills the requirements. An exercise has been started to upgrade 100 schools to Plus 2 in the next academic session."

The education minister also hoped that "the move will help to check the dropout rate and also to benefit the students. Dash further underlined that there were blocks that has no colleges and some large blocks where there were one to two higher educational institutions. Hence, there is a need to focus on the places, especially the mining areas where students are dropping out."

Meanwhile, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a conditional Letter of Intent (LoI) to the Government Medical College at Sundargarh for 100 MBBS seats. If the Odisha government is able to fulfil the conditions prescribed in the permission letter, Sundargarh will be the ninth government medical college in the state to impart medical education with the total number of seats increasing to 1,350, as reported by the Indian Express.

The commission has asked the Dean and Principal of the medical college to submit an undertaking with an assurance to provide all infrastructural facilities in terms of teaching and non-teaching staff, building, equipment and hospital as per NMC norms.
