One Week AYUSH Training Included In MBBS Internship

As per the recent guidelines by National Medical Commission (NMC), one-week AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) training is included in the MBBS internship program.

Despite Indian Medical Association (IMA) had opposed the idea of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students taking AYUSH training, NMC has included it in the internship program. For the one week period dedicated to the Indian Systems of Medicine in MBBS internship, the student can choose any of the Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa, and Homeopathy and if the medical college does not have the AYUSH facilities, the college can establish a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with any government institution having AYUSH facilities.

MBBS Internship Distribution as per NMC

The mandatory exclusive include Community Medicine for 12 weeks, General Medicine for 6 Weeks, Psychiatry - 2 weeks, Pediatrics - 3 weeks, General Surgery - 6 Weeks, Anesthesiology and Critical Care - 2 weeks, Obstetrics and Gynaecology including Family Welfare and Planning - 7 Weeks, Orthopaedics including Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) - 2 weeks, Emergency/ Trauma/Casualty - 2 weeks, Forensic Medicine and Toxicology - 1 week, Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology - 1 week, Otorhinolaryngology - 2 weeks, and Ophthalmology for 2 weeks.

The electives exclusive include Broad Specialties Group for four weeks total or a two weeks minimum and one week of Indian Systems of Medicine.

Students will have to complete one year compulsory rotating medical internship (CRMI) after passing the final year MBBS or National Exit Exam for MBBS (Next) to practice medicine in India.
