More than 50 persons, including students and a faculty member, have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati since December 31, 2021. An official of the institute said according to a government order, no student will be allowed to enter or exit the campus until further notice. He said 99 per cent of the Covid cases were people who returned to the campus from outside Assam after holidays.
Patients asymptomatic, have mild symptoms
He said the samples of the infected have been sent for genome sequencing. The patients were either asymptomatic or exhibiting only mild symptoms. Meanwhile, the institute has decided to conduct classes in online mode. It has asked all other students who were planning to return to the campus to cancel their plan in view of the sudden spike in Covid cases. Except for the faculty member and his family, all other patients have been isolated at the institute’s guest house.
The institute had recently commenced its academic activities at the newly initiated School of Business and will soon admit the first batch of students in its flagship programme, the Masters of Business Administration (MBA).The admission process for the MBA programme will open this month and the first batch is expected to commence their studies from July 2022.
The admission to the MBA programme will be in line with the admission process adopted by other IITs offering MBA programmes, with the requirement of opening this programme to prospective applicants who have qualified the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2021..
