Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has announced that the plan of implementing the policy has been put on hold for the current year, however, it has not been cancelled.

The Ministry of Education has lifted the criteria of having a postdoctoral degree of a PhD as an eligibility to be hired at the post of assistant professors across Indian Higher Education Institutes. The move comes considering that several Universities across the country have vacant posts and they are required to be filled on an urgent basis.

The government in 2018 had said that in order to be hired at the assistant professor posts, one will need a PhD and NET will not be the only recruitment criteria. This was announced under the University Grants Commission (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and other Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulations, 2018.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has announced that the plan of implementing the policy has been put on hold for the current year, however, it has not been cancelled. The move is also expected to fill vacant teaching posts across higher education institutes faster.

As per the existing norms, only those candidates who qualify for the teacher-eligible exams including NET, SET, SLET are eligible to apply for the post of assistant professor. Candidates who have been awarded a PhD degree in accordance with UGC regulations will be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET/SET.

Meanwhile, UGC NET 2021 exam dates have been rescheduled again by the NTA. The UGC NET December 2020 and June 2021 exams will now be held from October 17 to 25, 2021. The NTA took the decision after considering the representations by candidates for further rescheduling of exam dates of the UGC NET December 2020 and June 2021 cycles due to clashes with major exams on October 6 and 7, 2021.
