Pondicherry has decided to shut all schools conducting offline classes for students from Classes 1 to 9 amid the unabated rise in the number of COVID-19 cases. According to a notification released by Home and Education Minister A Namassivayam, online classes would resume for students of Classes 1 to 9 as the holiday has been declared for these classes starting today until further orders.

The number of cases of the novel coronavirus are increasing at an alarming rate. According to PTI, a spokesperson of the Department of Health told that the department recommended the government to declare holidays for schools conducting offline classes for students of Classes 1 to 9 amid the intense pandemic situation.
On December 4, the government reopened schools for classes 1 to 9 in the Union Territory with the pandemic situation showing signs of abatement.
However, the last few days have witnessed a rising number of fresh cases. The numbers touched 444 cases during last 24 hours ending 10 am Sunday.
The government has already dispensed with the physical conduct of the 25th National Youth Festival and has announced that it would be inaugurated on January 12 by Prime Minister through the virtual mode from Delhi on January 12.
Following the alarming increase of the COVID-19 cases, the government has also put restrictions on gatherings. People have received directions to wear masks, use sanitizers and follow social distancing in order to avoid COVID-19 spread.
