Consumer Protection Act, 2019 came into force from 20th July 2020
Consumer Protection Act, 2019 came into force from 20th July 2020 replacing the old Consumer Protection Act, 1986. The new Act provided three levels of Consumer Grievance redressal mechanism. The e-commerce entities will also be covered under this act. Advertisement Regulation is one of the major features of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
Every e-commerce platform is required to provide information such as return policy, refund, exchange, warranty and guarantee, delivery and shipment, modes of payment, grievance redressal mechanism and the likes including country of origin which is necessary for enabling the consumer to make an informed decision at the pre-purchase stage on its platform.
Consumer Protection Act, 2019 proposes the establishment of a Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) to promote, protect and enforce the rights of consumers, and make interventions in situations of unfair trade practices.
Under the act, the Central Consumer Protection Authority has been empowered to conduct investigations on violation of consumer rights, order recalls of unsafe goods, misleading advertisements, impose penalties on endorsers, publishers or manufacturers, etc. The rule notified under the Act also proposes to establish Consumer Protection Councils, Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions.
India ranked among 10 worst countries for working people by ITUC
International Trade Union Confederation released its ranking of 144 countries on degree of respect for workers’ rights On July 20, 2020. This was the seventh edition of its ranking. India was among the least performing countries in the ranking. The number of countries that impeded the registration of unions has increased. Three new countries - India, Egypt and Honduras - have entered the list of ten worst countries for workers.
The other least performing countries include Brazil, Bangladesh, Columbia, Kazakhstan, Honduras, Philippines, Egypt, Zimbabwe and Turkey.
The ITUC was established in 2006. It is based in Brussels, Belgium. It was formed on the merger of International Confederation of Free Trade Union and World Confederation of Labour. India is a member of ITUC.
Zoram Food Park inaugurated in Mizoram
Minister of Food Processing Industry Harsimrat Kaur Badal on July 20, virtually inaugurated the first Mega Food Park in Mizoram. The name of the food park is Zoram Food Park. The
Zoram Food Park has been established under Mega Food Park Scheme of Government of India.
Zoram Food Park is located 40 km from the state capital Aizawl at Khamrang, Kolasib District, Mizoram. Zoram Mega Food Park is an integrated project which provides infrastructure and services for food processing across the value chain to maximize value addition and minimize wastage.
England’s Dom Sibley became the first Cricketer to Violate the ICC Saliva Ban
Dom Sibley, the bowler of England, became the first cricketer to violate ICC’s ‘saliva ban’ rule on Day 4 of England’s vs West Indies second test match at Old Trafford in Manchester on July 20. Dom Sibley applied saliva on the ball accidentally during the match, but he immediately informed the umpires about it. Later, the umpires applied the sanitizer on the ball to sanitize it.
ICC Saliva ban rule
As per the new ICC Saliva ban, each team will be issued two warnings per inning for applying the saliva on the ball. After two such warnings, five runs penalty would be imposed on the team. ICC has made the umpires to implement the rule leniently on the ground because every team and players need time to adjust to the new rules.
ICC appointed a committee under Anil Kumble to suggest the ways to minimise the spread of corona on the field. These rules were implemented based on the recommendation of this committee.
UAE launched ‘HOPE’ mission from Japan
The United Arab Emirates become the first Arab country to launch its Space mission. The UAE launched its Mars Mission named ‘HOPE’ from Tanegashima Space Center in Japan on July 19, 2020. This unmanned mission will be active up to two Mars year. One Mars year is equivalent to two Earth years.
