The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) every year conducts recruitment to the post of Probationary Officer, Clerk & Specialist Officer. Lakhs of candidates apply and appear in the various exams conducted by IBPS. In 2018-19, as many as 3.33 lakh candidates skipped IBPS Clerk exam. According to the data released by IBPS for the recruitment in public sector banks, 10.82 lakh candidates had registered for IBPS Clerk exam, however, only 7.49 lakh candidates had appeared in the exam. This means, almost 31% of the registered candidates decided not to appear in the examination.

Similarly, 8.79 lakh candidates had registered for IBPS PO exam, however, only 6.58 lakh took the test. This highlights, 25% candidates missed the exam. For IBPS SO exam, total 2.01 lakh candidates had filled the application form, however, 1.57 lakh candidates appeared in the exam. This means, 22% of candidates skipped the exam.

While when we see the official data for 2017-18, the figures are slightly better in terms of registered candidates for Clerk exam. While the percentage of candidates skipping the PO and SO exams remain the same as in 2018-19. Even, the number of candidates who registered for the exams was higher in 2017-18 than the year 2018-19.

Exam-wise comparison of registered vs appeared

Let us check the number of candidates registered and appeared in 2018-18 and 2017-18 for various IBPS exams.

IBPS Clerk – More number of candidates appear in the exam in 2017-18 than 2017-19

IBPS Clerk recruitment data for 2017-18 reflects that a total of 4.1 lakh candidates did not sit for the exam. The total number of candidates registered for the exam is 13.41 lakh against which 9.31 lakh candidates appeared in the exam. In 2018-19, a total of 10.82 candidates registered in the exam while 7.49 lakh had appeared in the exam. This indicates 3.33 lakh candidates skipped the exam. Though the number of candidates skipping the exam is greater in 2017-18, however, in terms of percentage, the 4.1 lakh candidates who did not appear in the exam come down to 30%. Thus, the percentage of candidates who skipped the exam in 2017-18 is 1 % lesser in comparison to 2018-19.

IBPS PO: Same number of candidates skip the test in 2018 & 2017

A total of 2.21 lakh candidates did not appear in 2018-19, which stands at nearly 25%. The percentage of candidates who did not appear in PO exam is nearly same as 2017-18. Though the number of candidates registered and appeared in the exam is high in 2017-18. A total of 11.27 lakh candidates registered for the exam while 8.39 lakh candidates appeared in the test. In terms of percentage, the number of candidates skipped the exam is 25%. The number of candidates who registered for the exam in 2018-19 is 8.79 lakh, out of which 6.58 lakh candidates appeared in the exam.

IBPS SO: Lesser number of candidates skip the exam than PO & Clerk

In 2018-19, where 30% and 25% candidates did not appear in IBPS Clerk and PO exams, respectively, the number of candidates skipping IBPS SO exam is less at over 22%. In 2018-19, a total of 2.01 candidates had registered for the exam and 1.57 lakh candidates appeared in the test. Though the number of registered and appeared candidates were higher in 2017-18 but the number of candidates skipping the test is same as 2018-19. The number of candidates registered in 2017-18 is 2.61 lakh, out of which 2.01 lakh candidates appeared in the exam.
