National Defence Academy (NDA) is gearing up to admit the first batch of 19 girl cadets on the basis of their marks obtained in UPSC NDA 2 2021 written exam and Service Selection (SSB) interview. The first batch of girl cadets will take admission to the Army, Navy and Air Force wings of NDA for the courses commencing in June 2022. Out of these 19 girl cadets, 10 are for Army, six for Air Force and three for the Navy. The girls of the age group 16 ½ to 19 years will undergo three-year training at the academy. The military training of the girl cadets will be conducted in a gender-neutral manner. A total of 1.7 lakh women candidates had applied for UPSC NDA 2 exam 2021.

Training of Girl Cadets at NDA

The training objective of the girl cadet at NDA will continue to remain as centre excellence for producing military leaders equipped with professional, moral and physical attributes with minimum changes to the existing curriculum in training, drill outdoor training, etc. Owing to the physiological differences between male and female cadets, there might be certain changes in the physical training of girl cadets. Similar training methodology already exists in OTA Chennai, INA Ezhimala and AFA Hyderabad.

Girls Allowed to Join NDA

In August last year, the Supreme Court of India had passed a historic judgement allowing women candidates to join National Defence Academy. The court had, however, said that admission of women candidates will be subject to the final ruling on the petition. The eligibility criteria for admission of women cadets in NDA will be decided by the Ministry of Defence.
