Supreme Court has declined to take up plea seeking caste-based reservation (SC/ST/OBC) in National Defence Academy. The top court said that social revolution does not come overnight and takes time. The centre has been given time till July 6 to study the implication of induction and deployment of ex-National Defence Academy (NDA) women cadets in the armed forces.

A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and MM Sundresh told an intervener, who is seeking to reserve seats for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and Other Backward Classes in the NDA. The Bench also said that at present it will only go into the issue of admission of women in the defence education institutions. The further hearing will be held on July 19.

Higher Intake of Women Candidates

Defence Ministry has sought three months from Supreme Court to submit its response regarding the higher intake of women candidates in National Defence Academy. In this regard, the Centre told the Supreme Court that induction of women cadets in NDA was a major policy decision and it needs time to deliberate long term implications in terms of the deployment of cadets in armed forces.

An affidavit was filed by the Centre after a bench comprising Justice Sanjay Kaul and MM Sundresh had issued notice to the Union seeking explanation why the number of vacancies for women candidates was fixed at 19 for the NDA 2022 exam which is the same as the 2021 exam.

A total of 5,75,854 candidates applied for the NDA II 2021 exam and 3,57,197 candidates took the examination. A total of 8009 candidates, including 1002 women candidates passed the NDA II 2021 written exam.

NDA 2022 Vacancies

A total of 400 vacancies have been announced. Of these, 208 candidates (including 10 women) are for Army, 42 (including three for women) are for Navy, 120 (including six for women) are for IAF, and 30 for Naval Academy (For male candidates only).
