UPSC recommended 53 more candidates in Civil Services, 2018

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has recommended 53 more candidates for the allotment of services under the IAS Exam 2018. The Civil Service 2018 final result was declared on April 5, 2019, recommending 759 candidates against 812 vacancies. Now a requirement is raised by the Department of Personnel and Training for additional candidates. Sighting this requirement, the commission recommended 53 more candidates for the Civil Services 2018 batch. The category-wise details of the candidates are given below:

The candidates recommended above will be joining the respective service training and after the completion of training and exam, they will be absorbed by their respective allotted cadres.

This is a tradition now that the UPSC maintains a consolidated reserve list in order of merit below the last recommended candidate under the respective category to Civil Services, to serve the additional requirements of the Department of Personnel and Training. This list is made public after the final IAS Result.

To understand it in details, we can take an example. Let us suppose an existing Indian Revenue Services officer get selected with a rank of 189 in General category and he anticipates that he will be getting the IRS again. In that case, he will not join the service and continue doing his existing job. So like that, there will be various candidates who will not be joining the services. It will create a shortfall of candidates against the notified vacancies. This shortfall will be filled by the reserve list by cascading the ranks of candidates and changing the services allotted to some of them.

This is a very complex exercise as the new and the old selected candidates will be getting the services as per the newly assigned ranks. In addition to that, the department needs to take into consideration the service's preference given by the newly elected candidates so that they can be assigned to their preferred services of the vacancy exist in that service.
In this case, the reserve list will provide the backup supply of the candidates in these type of situations.
