SC asks Indian Nursing Council about minimum hours of clinical training for Nurses

The Supreme Court bench of Justices KM Joseph and Hrishikesh Roy has sought a response from the Indian Nursing Council about the minimum hours of clinical training that the student-nurses are expected to undertake either in the parent or in the affiliated hospital, to achieve the norms applicable to all across the country.

The court has asked the council this while considering an SLP assailing Kerala High Court's order dated December 22, 2020 ("impugned order") in which the HC was considering a writ appeal against the order of Single Judge wherein the judge had held that KVM College of Nursing was not entitled to get provisional affiliation from the Kerala University of Health Sciences to conduct Nursing Colleges and Nursing Schools for the academic year 2020-2021. as reported by Live Law.

The affiliation was denied based on the inspection and re-inspection which was conducted and pointed out various deficiencies including deficiency in bed occupancy as well as insufficiency in the inpatient strength in the parent hospital.

No interference is required in University's decision, said Kerala HC

The HC had observed that no interference was required in the action taken by the University to reject the continuation of provisional affiliation for the academic year in question.

Supreme Court observed that Advocate P Sree Kumar for Kerala University submission in the court says that if the nursing students of each batch need to take the required 420 hours of training, one student must undergo a minimum of 14 hours of training each day, which seems impossible considering the distance of the affiliated hospitals from the Nursing colleges.
