SC court to hear the plea of Ukraine returned Indian medical students on Sept 15

The Supreme Court of India has adjourned the group of petitions filed by Ukraine returned Indian medical students who sought to continue their medical education in India. Today, the matter was heard by the bench of Justices Hemant Gupta and Sudhanshu Dhuli and the next hearing is scheduled for September 15.

The Solicitor General Tushar Mehta requested for adjournment on the matter. He said, "Your lordships have referred to the committee of External Affairs, it seems they have taken a favourable view. I need to get instructions from the Ministry," as reported by Live Law.

The background

On August 3, Lok Sabha Committee on External Affairs submitted a recommendation that the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare must consider accommodating the students who returned from Ukraine to the Indian private medical colleges as a one-time measure.

The petitioners sought an appropriate decision by the Government of India and the National Medical Commission in view of this recommendation.

What steps taken so far for these students

The National Medical Commission has allowed the final year foreign medical graduates from Ukraine and China to appear in the FMGE exam and those who will qualify for the examination need to undergo a two-year internship as against the standard one-year internship. Many Russian universities have also offered to accommodate these students in their medical colleges.
