UGC Latest News

University Grants Commission (UGC) has released the standard operating procedures (SOPs) allowing central universities to conduct entrance exams to fill vacant seats after counselling through CUET. The decision has been taken to reduce the waste of resources and offer quality of higher education to students who aspire to pursue higher studies in central universities.

"It has come to the notice of UGC that a good number of seats at times remain vacant even after three or four rounds of counselling one of the Central Universities and their constituent/affiliated colleges. To keep the seats vacant for an entire academic year is not only a waste of resources but also results in the denial of quality higher education to many students who aspire to pursue higher studies in Central Universities." Says UGC official notification.

CUET Scores to Remain Primary Criteria

The commission has notified that the central university admission will remain the primary criteria for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and admission to only vacant seats can be conducted based on the entrance test.

I"t may also be pertinent to mention here that CUET scores will remain the primary criteria for admitting students. In fact, UGC has already written to all the Central Universities to admit students through CUET." The official notice further added.

Standard Operating Procedures to Fill Vacant Seats

The following guidelines have to be followed to fill vacant seats in central universities:

  1. Admission based on CUET scores will remain the primary criteria for admission. However, students who appeared for CUET but did not apply for the university for admission can be considered for admission.
  2. In case the seats still remain vacant after CUET applicants, the university may conduct an entrance exam at its own level or a screening test.
  3. The authority may conduct admission based on marks secured in the qualifying examination.
  4. The entire admission process shall be conducted based on merit and have transparency.
  5. The reservation policy will be implemented under any circumstances.
  6. The central universities shall ensure timely implementation of the entire admission process.
