DST India announces PhD Research Fellowship hike; Details here

After the nationwide demand of PhD scholars for a hike in their fellowships ever since the 2018 revision, DST India has increased the fellowship amount JRF, SRF, and Research Associates, read here for more details.

DST India has increased the PhD Research Fellowship stipend for Junior Research Fellowships (JRF), Senior Research Fellowships (SRF), Research Associates (RA1), RA2, and RA3.

The government has approved enhancing emoluments for JRF/SRF/RAs engaged in Research & Development activities whereby they will receive the revised fellowships w.e.f January 1, 2023. 

The JRF stipend has increased by 19% from Rs 31000 to Rs 37,000, SRF amount increased to Rs 42,000, RA 1 - Rs 58000, RA 2 - Rs 61000, and RA 3 - Rs 63000.

The background

The PhD scholars were protesting and demanding immediate action regarding the increase in fellowships. DST India was mulling over a hike in fellowships for PhD scholars and research associates since December 2022. 

On May 9, 2023, DST India tweeted, "The issue of the Fellowship hike is top on our priority. @IndiaDST and other departments are already working on it. We appeal to students to have patience. The issue will be resolved soon."

The All India Research Scholars Association (AIRSA) had also written letters to the Department of Science and Technology, Secretary, Dr Srivari Chandrasekhar regarding revision in fellowship for Research Scholars such as URF, SRF, RA, PDF, Young Scientists, etc. with annual increment.
