India Ranks 3rd globally in PhDs, Science should make India Aatmanirbhar: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is ranked third globally in terms of PhDs and also the Startup ecosystem. He said that India is fast becoming one of the top countries in the world in the field of science. Modi has urged scientific community to gain expertise in the field of quantum mechanics.

Modi said that Sustainable Development and Women's Empowerment are deeply connected. He said that India is fast becoming one of the top countries in the world in the field of science. “Till 2015 we were at 81st place in the Global Innovation Index of 130 countries, but in 2022 we have reached the 40th place,” PM Modi said.

The development of science in India to meet the needs of India should be the basic motivation of our scientific community. Science in India should make India Aatmanirbhar, said Prime Minister during the 108th meeting of the Indian Science Congress.

He said that the efforts of Science can bear fruit only when they go from Labs to Land when its effects are from global down to the grassroots. PM Modi said: “When great achievements of science travel from experiments to people's experiences, an important message is conveyed.”

PM Modi today inaugurated 108th Indian Science Congress being hosted by Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU). Modi during his address said that our youth are inspired to believe that they can positively impact the world through science.

Modi said that new India has two things in abundance which can boost our country further: they are data and technology. India's scientific community will play an important role in achieving the heights India will reach in the next 25 years.

“India is moving fast and I would like our young scientists to gain expertise in the field of quantum mechanics: PM Modi said. He said that India is touching new heights in the Space Sector. PM Said: Our low-cost satellite launch vehicles will help India increase its capacity, and the world will look up to India's services and innovation.”

The theme of the event this year is “Science and Technology for Sustainable Development with Women's Empowerment.” The Public Talks and exhibitions are open to the general public. Apart from 14 sections, there will be a Women’s Science Congress, a Farmers’ Science Congress, a Children’s Science Congress, a Tribal Meet, a section on Science and Society and a Science Communicators’ Congress.

The Plenary Sessions will feature Nobel Laureates, leading Indian and foreign researchers, experts and technocrats from a wide variety of fields, including space, defence, IT and medical research. The technical sessions will showcase path-breaking and applied research in Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, Animal, Veterinary and Fishery Sciences, Anthropological and Behavioural Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth System Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Information and Communication Science & Technology, Material Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Medical Sciences, New Biology, Physical Sciences, and Plant Sciences.

A special attraction of the event is a mega expo “Pride of India”. The prominent developments, major achievements and significant contributions largely of Indian Science and Technology to society will be showcased in the exhibition, which brings together and displays hundreds of new ideas, innovations, and products covering the entire canvas of the scientific world. Pride of India displays the strengths and achievements of Government, Corporate, PSUs, Academic and R&D Institutes, Innovators & Entrepreneurs from all across the country.

In the run-up to the event, the Vigyan Jyot programme, a tradition of the Indian Science Congress was held today. More than 400 school and college students gathered at Zero Milestone and, wearing special caps and T-shirts, proceeded in a rally to the university campus. They took a pledge to adopt scientific thinking in their lives. ISCA General President, Dr. (Mrs.) Vijay Laxmi Saxena urged them not to study science as merely a subject, but make it a part of life in anything that they do.

Vigyan Jyot - Flame of Knowledge - was conceived along the lines of the Olympic flame. It is a movement dedicated to nurturing scientific temper in society, especially the youth. The flame was installed at the university campus and will continue to be alight until the end of the 108th Indian Science Congress.
