Jadavpur University Ragging Death: 6 students banned from entering campus

The latest in the Jadavpur University death case is that a total of 6 students are banned from entering the campus of the university. All of them are currently serving judicial custody in Presidency Jail.

The six accused are Deepsekhar Dutta (economics), Manotosh Ghosh (sociology), and Md Asif Afzal Ansari, Md Arif, Ankan Sarkar and Satyabrata Roy (all engineering students), as reported by TheStatesman.

The death of an 18 year old boy occurred in August this year. This move came nearly two months later after the anti-ragging committee of the varsity had recommended that the students be prevented from entering the institute.

“The EC decided unanimously not to allow those students, who have been booked under POCSO (prevention of children from sexual offences) and sexual charges and are now in custody till their names are cleared,” said an official of the university.

The Background

The fresher student had fallen off a second-floor balcony of the JU Main Hostel on August 9 after intensive ragging. He died at a KPC Medical College the next morning while undergoing treatment. Earlier, the classmates said that he was in stress but family suspected ragging.

A few days after the incident, National Human Right Commission (NHRC) issued notices to the Jadavpur University registrar and West Bengal government. The university also reconstituted the anti-ragging panel.
