MPhil Is Not A Recognised Degree Anymore, says UGC

The Commission had announced earlier that it will be scrapping MPhil courses from 2022-23 in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. However, UGC has noticed that many institutes are still inviting fresh applications for the course. The Commission has warned the students through an official notification that the program is no longer valid.

University Grants Commission (UGC) has warned the students that many universities are still offering admission to MPhil Courses which is not a recognised degree anymore. The Commission has issued a notification and said that despite the university body having cancelled the course earlier, there are universities which are inviting fresh applications for the course.

"It has come to the notice of the UGC that a few Universities are inviting fresh applications for M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) program. In this regard, it is to bring to the notice that the M.Phil. degree is not a recognized degree. The Regulation No. 14 of the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations 2022. (https://www.usc.gov.inlpdfriews/09O9572-Minimum-Standards-and-Procedure-for-Award-ofPhD-Degree.pd0 clearly states that Higher Educational Institutions shall not offer M.Phil. program," reads UGC's notification.

UGC has framed University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations,2022 which were published in the Gazette of India on November 7, 2022, added the UGC notification. 

UGC has also urged the universities' authorities to take immediate steps to stop admissions to M.Phil. program. Earlier, M.Phil. degree was a postgraduate research degree awarded by universities.
