Punjabi University's Prof allegedly involved in harassment of female students gets suspended

During the suspension period, Professor Surjit Singh will remain on the university's Ghanaur College campus.

As per reports, Punjabi University has suspended Professor Surjit Singh for allegedly mentally harassing a girl student who died on September 13, 2023. 

The university Vice Chancellor Dr Arvind had ordered an investigation against him after receiving complaints against the professor. Following an office order by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Singh was suspended with effect from November 8. The Professor was facing a departmental chargesheet and was given 15 days to submit a reply, as reported by Tribune India.

The registrar of the Punjabi University issued the suspension orders of professor Surjit Singh on Wednesday.

The suspension order has come following a protest by students including members of the United Sikh Student Federation. Dr Surjit, however, claimed that he was the victim of a witch hunt. He said, “I will explore all legal options available. I will fight against the suspension," as reported by Hindustan Times.

A group of students also attacked the professor at the university. Another group of students are protesting outside the Vice Chancellor's office demanding action against students who reportedly attacked the professor.

University's officials claimed that further inquiry based on the new evidence and statements had also been initiated against those who had attacked the professor.

A committee of retired sessions judge Jaswinder Singh will investigate the girl's death and the alleged sexual harassment of several other students.
