UGC Chairman launches IGNOU's four-year undergraduate programme in various disciplines

University Grants Commission Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar has today launched IGNOU's four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) in various disciplines.

FYUP is an essential reform in Indian higher education. Students from across the country will have the opportunity to enrol in IGNOU’s FYUP. Many of IGNOU’s courses are also available on SWAYAM, he said.

Whether a student wants to take these courses as part of their regular programme or wants to do a simultaneous UG degree in a different discipline than their primary discipline, the opportunities for the students are aplenty. Congratulations, IGNOU, for starting four-year undergraduate programmes, he added.

In the FYUP Curriculum Framework as per NEP 2020, it is stated that in three years, a student will do 48 credits core courses in one discipline, 24 credits in discipline-specific electives, 8 credits generic electives from allied disciplines. Under AEC/VAC a student will do a 4 credits course on one modern Indian languages and 4 credits course on English communication skills. Another two or three courses having 8 credits will be on environment; ethical/ cultural values; understanding India. 12-16 credits courses on skill/vocational education and 12-8 credits courses on project/internship.

However, if a student desires not to specialize in one discipline, in that case, the student will decide allied discipline courses to get Bachelor's Degree in Multidisciplinary studies like our earlier B. A. / B.Com. /B.Sc. General programme. Credit distribution semester wise will remain the same.

Each discipline may identify appropriate courses offered online through the SWAYAM platform, get those courses approved by IGNOU statutory bodies and students will be allowed to get benefits of credits doing online courses with the maximum limit as prescribed in the UGC guidelines, added the statement of FYUP Curriculum Framework as per NEP 2020.
