UGC extends M.Phil programme validity till 2025-26

UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. degree) Regulations 2022, notified on November 7, 2022, to discontinue M.Phil. programme in accordance with the recommendation of the National Education Policy 2020. However, now the Commission has decided to extend the validity of the program till 2025-26.

"Considering the vital role played by Clinical Psychologists and Psychiatric Social Workers in delivering mental health services, the UGC has decided to extend the validity of M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology and M.Phil in Psychiatric Social Work till 2025-26 academic session only, in partial relaxation to the above Regulations," reads UGC notification.

"Accordingly, students can be admitted to an M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology and M.Phil in Psychiatric Social Work programmes by HEIs till 2025-26 academic session only," added the notification.

Earlier, Commission had strictly warned the univerties against M.Phil admission and said that some universities are inviting fresh applications for M.Phil program which is not a recognised degree and hence, they should not offer the program going forward.

M.Phil is a two year old course. M.Phil goes above and beyond the conventional taught Master's degree by emphasising independent study and a more narrowly focused subject. After completing the MPhil course candidates can consider pursuing a PhD programme. It is perfect for individuals who desire to pursue careers as professors, teachers, research scientists, teaching assistants, scientists, editors, etc. As the M.Phil work scope is very high, graduates can find employment both in India and overseas.
