UGC urges HEIs to adopt Guidelines to Provide Equitable Opportunity for SEDGs

UGC urges HEIs to adopt Guidelines to Provide Equitable Opportunity for SEDGs

UGC has writen to the HEIs regarding the launch of "Guidelines to provide Equitable Opportunity for the Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs) in the HEIs" by UGC. The Commission has requested all the universities to adopt these guidelines for the benefit of the students belonging to SEDGs and to make them responsible citizens of the Country who can contribute in the nation building.

NEP 2020 has specific provisions that are nececssary to help India for addressing various challenges to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, particularly the challenges related to achieving SDG-4 (quality education), SDG-5 (gender equality), SDG-1 (no poverty), and SDG-8 (decent work and economic growth).

These guidelines are meant to ensure that students belonging to SEDGs have a safe and secure environment and equitable access to quality education in Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs), as specified in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

UGC letter says, "These guidelines prove very useful and enhance SEDGs skills and capability through bridge course, earn-while schemes, outreach programmes and further provide them good opportunities for employability and also enhance their participation in higher education institutions thorugh access, equity, and inclusion."

Keeping in view the significant recommendations of NEP 2020 towards accessibility, equitable, and inclusive Higher Education for SEDGs as envisaged in out Constitution, the UGC has prepared framed guidelines entitled "Guidelines to provide Equitable Opportunity for the Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Groups (SEDGs) in the HEIs", added UGC.
