National Unity Day, also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is a significant observance in India that commemorates the birth anniversary of one of the country’s most revered leaders, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

University Grants Commission has urged the Higher Education Institutes to celebrate National Unity Day also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas on October 31, 2023.

The Government of India observes October 31, 2023, as a special occasion to foster and reinforce dedication to preserve and strengthen the unity, integrity and security of our nation, by celebrating it as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) all over the country to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

"The occasion provides us an opportunity to re-affirm the inherent strength and resilience of our nation to withstand the actual and potential threats to the unity, integrity, and security of our country," says UGC statement.

"The Higher Education Institutions are requested to organize a pledge-taking ceremony to mark the occasion of the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas.," added UGC.

National Unity Day Pledge

Following is the pledge of National Unity Day - "I solemnly pledge that I dedicate myself preserve to the nation. The unity, integrity and security of the nation and also strive hard to spread this message among my fellow countrymen. I take this pledge in the spirit of unification of my country which was made possible by the vision and actions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. I also solemnly resolve to make my own contribution to ensure internal security of my country."
