The revised Tobacco Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI) guidelines include creating awareness about the harmful effects and long-term health impacts of tobacco in educational institutions.
University Grants Commission (UGC) has requested all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to adhere to the (ToFEI) guidelines. The Tobacco-Free Educational Institution (ToFEI) guidelines have been released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India to make educational institutions 'Tobacco Free'.
Through the notification, UGC has presented the data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) stating that 8.5% of school students aged between 13 to 15 use tobacco in any form with over 5500 children starting using tobacco every year. Along with this, the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS- 2) was also shared which stated that 55% of lifelong tobacco users begin consuming tobacco in any form before even attaining 20.
Electronic Cigarettes: Modern Age Poison
The notification further stated that electronic cigarettes are a modern-age poison that has significant health risks, including DNA damage, cancer formation, and various respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Tobacco consumption leads to the commencement of other addictions that ultimately affect the person's health and impact fetal development and pregnancy in women.
