Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu O Panneerselvam has urged the government of Tamil Nadu Government to shut schools in the state amid the rising flu-like cases. The statement came after the announcement made by the Puducherry government regarding the closure of schools for LKG to Class 8 students due to increasing cases of the flu.
Tamil Nadu recently reported a spike in flu cases. The recent spike has prompted the neighbouring UT to declare holidays in schools till September 25. Asking the current CM M K Stalin to take immediate action, Panneerselvam said that schools must be shut in the state to contain the virus spread.
In a statement issued, Panneerselvam said that the government was duty bound to maintain ‘public health’. He also pointed out that the hospitalization of children in the state had risen lately in the state.
The former Chief Minister said, "The Tamil Nadu government should declare holidays in schools for some time and postpone the exam schedule till the time the cases come down. The government should take steps to create awareness among the people about the flu and make the necessary medicines available to them."
Talking about the health concern of the elderly, the former CM alleged that doctors have warned that people over 60 years of age should be careful. The statement comes in the backdrop of Puducherry administration’s announcement of holidays for schools for this week.
Meanwhile, no official statement has come from the government regarding the shutting down of schools and colleges in the state.
