Soon, mechanical engineering curriculum to get a makeover
Revised curriculum to include 3D printing, drone manufacturing and information technology (IT) subjects. Once approved, it will be made part of all AICTE-affiliated colleges from next academic session.
Mechanical engineering courses offered by engineering colleges in India will soon be more technology-centric with 3D printing, drone manufacturing, and information technology (IT) subjects as part of the syllabus, The Print reported.
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is revising mechanical engineering curriculum which will be implemented in all affiliated colleges and institutes affiliated to the council. Two other engineering branches – computer science, and electronics and communications — will also be revised.
The idea is to make the course more job-oriented in the fast-changing demands of the industries. Sources said mechanical engineering students had been finding it difficult to get jobs due to automation in the core segment. Many of them were opting to work in other branches such as computer or electronics so, curriculum update was needed, the report added.
AICTE chairman Anil Sahasradbudhe said the council had received feedback that the mechanical engineering curriculum was outdated, following which a committee consisting of IIT and NIT experts was constituted to submit a report in this regard. Once the report is finalised and approved, it will be made part of all AICTE-affiliated colleges and will be implemented from the next academic session.
The technical education regulator also received feedback regarding decline in the number of students opting for mechanical engineering courses. Therefore, the idea was also to make the course more attractive for students.
