Municipal Administration Minister KN Nehru has proposed that steps should be taken to establish medical and engineering colleges in the city through the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to improve opportunities for higher education for students. He said this after launching a new logo for the corporation-run Chennai schools.

The proposal has been submitted to Chief Minister MK Stalin. Nehru said the transport department has set up medical and engineering colleges with 32 per cent seats reserved for the workers of their children. Similarly, the GCC can also run medical and engineering colleges.

At present, not even 5 per cent of students of Chennai Schools join engineering and medical colleges for higher education. The setting up of medical and engineering colleges will provide more higher education opportunities to economically weaker students of the 279 corporation schools in the city.

As many as 1.04 lakh students from disadvantaged families are on the rolls in Chennai schools. Various initiatives to improve school education and nurture leadership skills and decision making abilities in students have been implemented. In 2014, the proposal to launch a medical college in the Corporation’s Communicable Diseases Hospital in Tondiarpet was shelved by the AIADMK government after GCC officials began the process of certification required to establish a medical college.

Nehru released a documentary on Chennai schools, which included details about the infrastructure and teaching methods followed in these schools. He also distributed badges among school students. The minister also gave away prizes to 395 teachers who had won several competitions on Teacher’s Day.
