The Tamil Nadu Government issued a notification reserving 20% of all the government jobs to the candidates belong to the Tamil Medium. The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the state high court’s Madurai bench citing the delay in the notification for the 20% reservation in the state government jobs and other positions.
The notification was issued about the amendment in the State of Persons Studied in Tamil Medium Act, 2010. Under the amendment, the state government can provide 20% per cent reservation to the candidates in the government services. The governor of the state Banwarilal Purohit accorded his assent to the bill on December 7, 2020. The amendment was passed by the state legislative assembly in March 2020. These reservations will come into force from next TNPSC recruitment notifications.
As per the amendment, the candidate must have studied in Tamil Medium till the educational qualification as prescribed in the recruitment advertisement. The state government notified the Persons Studied in Tamil Medium (PSTM) quota in the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) recruitment such as TNPSC Group 2 exam and TNPSC Group 4 exams.
The rules specify that the candidate must study in the Tamil medium from the basic to the educational qualification as prescribed in the TNPSC Recruitment notification. If the reserve seats remain vacant in the search of the eligible person, the candidates from other categories can be appointed against such vacancies.
