BEd course curriculum is being reworked by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). The duration of BEd course is expected to be made of 4 years as against the two year BEd course that is being offered in India presently.

Human Resource Development Minister, Prakash Javadekar shared that the government would be introducing BEd course of four years duration from the next year. This step is being undertaken by the government to improve the quality of teaching in India.

Regarding the same, Prakash Javadekar at a two day conference attended by principals of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas was quoted as saying, “We are going to launch a four- year integrated course from next year. The standard of teaching has gone down because it tends to be the last option for those who join. Teaching should become a profession of choice but not a profession of leftover that is why we are introducing 4-year integrated BEd course in the coming academic year”.

The BEd course structure that is being proposed by the government is being formulated since one year and is being offered in three streams – BA, BSc and BCom. The new BEd curriculum is being prepared by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE).

The new BEd curriculum would save one year of candidates as they would be allowed to pursue the BEd course right after Class 12. Presently, students need to first complete their graduation studies and thereafter they can pursue a BEd degree of two years duration.

BEd New Course Structure

As per the reworked course structure for BEd, the HRD Ministry has proposed the below mentioned points:

  • BEd course would be a four year integrated programme.
  • BEd programme would be offered at two levels which are Pre-Primary to Primary level and Upper Primary to Secondary Level.
  • BEd course would be conducted in three streams – BA, BSc and BCom.
  • The reworked BEd curriculum would be prepared by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), a statutory body tasked with coordinating teacher education in India.
  • NCTE has invited applications from interested institutions to include BEd- 4 years duration programme in their curriculum from next year onwards.
  • BEd 4 year integrated course would be offered from the 2019-2020 academic session
  • Aspirants who have already completed their bachelor’s or master’s degree have a grace period where they can study a BEd course of two years or of three years (integrated BEd+Med programme).
