Education Ministry discontinues 2 awards for Hindi writers

The ‘Shiksha Puraskar’ and the ‘Hinditar Bhashi Hindi Lekhak Puraskar’ have been discontinued upon implementation of a directive of the Home Ministry.

Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan has announced the discontinuation of two Hindi awards – ‘Shiksha Puraskar’ and ‘Hinditar Bhashi Hindi Lekhak Puraskar’.

Shiksha Puraskar’ was launched by the Central government in 1992 under which five awards worth INR 1 lakh each were given yearly. It was granted to encourage writers who came up with original, creative pieces in Hindi. Hinditar Bhashi Hindi Lekhak Puraskar’ was granted to writers belonging to non-Hindi speaking areas to promote Hindi writing. ‘Hinditar Bhashi Hindi Lekhak’ carried a cash prize of INR 50,000 each year. As per the circular issued by the Union Higher Education Ministry, a meeting chaired by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in November 2022 had decided to implement the Home Ministry’s directive on discontinuation of certain awards. Another circular dated May 17 said the Ministry had decided to discontinue ‘Shiksha Puraskar’ and ‘Hinditar Bhashi Hindi Lekhak Puraskar’.
