The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) started the Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.) course on October 2, 2017, to provide training to the in-service untrained teachers who are in-service. This includes teachers teaching in various primary and upper primary government, government-aided and private un-aided schools across India, who joined on or before August 10, 2017. With this supplementary examination, the programme has come to an end. MHRD had undertaken this ambitious programme to train 11 lakh teachers by March 31, 2019.
The NIOS D.El.Ed programme was considered by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) to impart training to the untrained teachers, who joined on and before August 10, 2017. Due to a large number of untrained teachers in the country and less training schools, it was impossible for the MHRD to impart classroom training to them. This is why the MHRD had decided to consider the distance and open mode of teaching. In order to bring in open and distant learning course for untrained teachers, National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was brought in. This is why the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) named the examination as NIOS D.El.Ed programme.
