Going as per the decision taken by the state, government schools, model schools, schools operated by local bodies, private aided and unaided schools, reopened on September 1.

Telangana School Reopening: Amid the reopening of Telangana schools, only 21% of students appeared to attend offline classes on the first day of the school reopening on Wednesday, i.e. September 1. According to the information released by the Education Department, out of the total 52,22,174 students, only 11,37,095 attended offline classes. Going as per the decision taken by the state, government schools, model schools, schools operated by local bodies, private aided and unaided schools, reopened on September 1. However, the state HC’s intervention led to the closure of residential schools run by Social Welfare and Tribal Welfare departments until further notice.

According to the media reports, public schools recorded an overall attendance of 27.45 per cent. Whereas private schools witnessed an overall attendance of 18.35 per cent. After witnessing thin attendance in schools, the state health minister also urged parents to send their wards for offline classes. During a press conference, Director of Public Health Dr G Srinivasa Rao informed that more than 90 percent of the staff both teaching and non-teaching are vaccinated and the rest would be vaccinated soon.

Rao further added that the schools have been directed to follow all COVID-19 protocols released by the Health Ministry and all possible necessary precautionary measures are being taken given the health of children. He further informed that all the students will be tested in case five or more COVID cases are reported from a single school. Immediate suspension of classes in such a scenario and initiation of the treatment as per standard protocols are among the directives.

Meanwhile, the state HC has given option to private schools to either conduct offline classes or hold online classes. Schools have also been directed not to force any student to attend school. The court also states that the government cannot punish schools for not conducting offline classes and schools cannot force penalise parents for not sending their children to school.
