The move to restore the 5 per ent quota in private colleges was announced after an order was issued by the Madras High Court.
Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU) has announced that it has decided to restore the 5 per cent quota for the vocational stream students enrolled in the university. The University also announced that the restoration will also be applicable to the private affiliated colleges of TNAU.
The move to restore the 5 per ent quota in private colleges was announced after an order was issued by the Madras High Court. The order came after S Moorthy, Forum of Education Development in Tamil Nadu's Coordinator moved to the court in 2019 after a PIL was filed on behalf of his son. TNAU was earlier providing a 5 per cent quota for vocational stream students who had agriculture as the main subject in government and private colleges, till 2019. However, later it decided that the quota in private colleges should be withdrawn.
In 2019, Madras High Court observed that the 5 per cent quota must be applied to both the constituent colleges and the affiliated private colleges across Tamil Nadu. The court also suggested that students under the vocational stream to be permitted in the general category as well as the reservation categories and not only restrict them to the 5 per cent quota.
With the withdrawal of the quota, only few candidates were able to join the courses in BSc with Agriculture and Horticulture as their main streams. As per sources, 98 seats were available in 18 government colleges under the 5 per cent quota. However, now, due to the restoration, more than 100 seats will be available for students in the vocational stream.
