Udaykumar Yaragatti appointed NITK Surathkal Director

Yaragatti took over the role from Karanam Umamaheshwar Rao, who had been serving the NITK as Director since July 2017. 

Udaykumar R Yaragatti, former Director of Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, has been appointed as the Director of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) Surathkal. 

Yaragatti took over the role from Karanam Umamaheshwar Rao, who had been serving the NITK as Director since July 2017. Yaragatti did his BTech in Electrical Power Engineering from NITK Surathkal, which was then known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), in 1984 and MTech in Industrial Electronics also from KREC in 1990. He went on to complete his PhD in Energy Systems Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in 2000.  His areas of interest include renewable energy resources, power electronics, energy management and smart grid. 

NITK Surathkal has 13 departments, one school and 12 supporting centres. Apart from that, the institute has a pool of 278 faculty members along with a network of 27,000 alumni. Established in 1960, NIT Surathkal is ranked 10 and 32 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2021 in the engineering and overall categories, respectively. 

Umamaheshwar Rao is NIT Rourkela Director 

Meanwhile, Umamaheshwar Rao, former Director of NITK Surathkal, has been appointed as the new Director of NIT Rourkela. The Ministry of Education had recently finalised Rao as NIT Rourkela Director. Before Rao, Simanchal Panigrahi was acting as in-charge Director of the institute.
